The Black Angel

John Cassone is another of the many Golden Age creators whose personal history appears to be unknown. This is unfortunate, though we do have his work to admire. And admirable it is, especially his fine work on MLJ's The Web (which he co-created) and Doll Man's debut issue for Quality. Cassone also created (if there is a writer co-creator, the name has been lost to posterity) The Black Angel for Hillman's innovative Air Fighter's (later changed to Air Boy) Comics. The Black Angel's first appearance was in Air Fighters #2, November 1942, and she would continue fighting myriad menaces until the Fall of 1945. In 1986, Eclipse Comics revived and updated the character, but the attempt was limited and short-lived. Presented below is The Black Angel's 6th appearance in Air Fighter's #8. It features Hitler himself and involves a technical breakthrough making possible a Nazi invasion of England without use of barges or boats. With no powers and only her airplane and a pistol for weapons, it's up to The Black Angel (who is neither black nor angelic) to foil the sinister plot.
